When does a Minnesota PE license renew?

All Minnesota PE licenses renew on June 30 of even-numbered years, and hours must be earned in the two years before that date apart from permitted carryover. Hours earned during a 180-day cure period to fix a shortfall cannot also count toward the next renewal.

Can Minnesota PEs carry over PDH?

A maximum of 12 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period. While the mandatory 2 PDH in ethics cannot be carried forward, additional ethics credits can be, provided 2 PDH in ethics is also earned in the current renewal period.

This requirement must be satisfied during the two-year period prior to biennial renewal except for a carryover permitted from the previous renewal period, which must not exceed 50 percent of the biennial requirement of professional development hours. Minn. Stat. 326.107(a)

Does the Minnesota board pre-approve courses?

The Board does not pre-approve courses or providers. It's up to each engineer to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria.

What content counts toward Minnesota PDH?

A well-rounded education covering technical, non-technical, regulatory, ethical, and business practice activities is required, provided it directly benefits public health, safety, or welfare. Each activity must have a clear purpose and objective to maintain, improve, or expand pre-existing skills and knowledge or develop new relevant skills and knowledge. Effective from the renewal period ending June 30, 2016, 2 PDH must be in engineering ethics each renewal cycle. These ethics PDH must be earned within the renewal biennium and are not eligible for carry forward.

The ethics hours must have been earned during the biennium to which they are applied and shall not be used toward carryover. Minn. Stat. 326.107

Which activities count in Minnesota?

Internet-based courses count when they include an exam or another verification of participation, with no cap on hours. Teaching, published work, exam grading, public service on technical boards, and patents also qualify within statutory limits.

Other Minnesota rules to know

Dual license holders must fulfill the PDH requirements of the license demanding the highest number of PDH, with a minimum of one-third of the total PDH required in each profession. The remaining one-third may be obtained in either profession at the licensee's discretion. PDH records should be kept for a minimum of 2 years.
