When does a Michigan PE license renew?

Michigan PE licenses expire October 31 of odd-numbered years. All 30 hours must be completed during the two years immediately before the expiration date.

Can Michigan PEs carry over PDH?

Michigan has no carryover. Hours earned beyond 30 in one cycle cannot be applied to the next, so pace the work across the two years.

Does the Michigan board pre-approve courses?

The Board does not pre-approve courses or providers. It's up to each engineer to ensure the selected activities meet the Board's criteria.

What content counts toward Michigan PDH?

Beginning March 2022, 2 PDH covering engineering ethics is mandatory each renewal period. Courses should aim to maintain, improve, or expand skills and knowledge relevant to the engineering practice. Not Accepted Topic Areas include Business Skills, Firm Management, and Personal Development. A maximum of 12 PDH can be earned in a 24-hour period, and programs with substantially similar content to previously credited programs will not be granted PDH.

Of the 30 hours, not less than 2 hours of continuing education must be earned in ethics, as it relates to professional engineering. Mich. Admin. Code R 339.16040

Which activities count in Michigan?

Regular employment duties do not count. Online continuing education is accepted without a limit on hours, along with courses and activities approved or offered by another state board of engineers, a professional engineering society, NCEES, or ABET.
